Sohar Port wanted to revise their strategic planning process as it was not always delivering and required significant effort to manage the strategic programme of initiatives. The re-design was aimed to provide internal and external stakeholders with confidence that investments were worthwhile and would realise the desired benefits.
Following a process review with a comparison against best practice, we designed a new strategic planning process for Sohar Port. The process adopted best practice from HM Treasury’s Green Book, leading programme management techniques and used other key standards. The approach was future proof and will enable more sophisticated strategic initiative assessment techniques to evolve over time. We undertook a number of awareness and training sessions on the assessment findings, best practice techniques and the new process. Process maps and procedures were developed for the new processes with revised supporting templates and tools.
We also developed a Service Measure Framework to enable strategic initiative evaluations and a Strategy and Risk Framework to align projects to the strategic intent of the organisation.
The revised process was welcomed by the Board and the key external stakeholders, with the new longer-term strategies producing a more aligned strategic programme. The process was welcomed by the users across the business and proved to be more efficient, with delivery improving.
